Day of the Dead Pageant!

Art Life is holding their monthly fundraiser at Pawbowsky's on the 30th of October! What are we doing this time?

Well, there will, of course, be the usual display of wonderful art and handcrafted items by local artisans. Live music by the Faux Show, belly dancing by the talented Sabrina Owens, and then there's the Day of the Dead Pin Up Pageant! Lovely ladies will be competing for the title of Miss Muertos by strutting their stuff in their best Dia de los Muertos Pin Up garb. Winner gets a cash prize plus a free photoshoot with Pin Ups and Lace.

You can also get your picture taken with some of the models for $5. Oh la la!

If you are interested in competing email info@pinupsandlace.com to reserve a spot!

Murfreesboro Art Community According to Paige Ridley

Art has been hailed as a cultural thermometer of location. The presence, the prolifery, exposure, and buying of art has much to say about a community's concern with humanitarianism, investment of care and awareness of one another through adversity. As a new kid in town, I had to look high and low, long and hard, not only to find the presence of art in Murfreesboro but along with it, the presence of like minds, true friends, and cultural acceptance. I would meet the occasional MTSU art major with excitement, offering some shared time and use of the extra room in my newly occupied house that I use as a studio... only to be denied again and again. It seems that when approached, the students were offended to think they weren't the only one whose "thing" was art, particularly printmaking. I was responded to with snickers. Because who am I, after all, to think I can hang out with them? Well I'm already an art school graduate, that's who. I became the one who was offended. How could these kids really believe they could have lives as artists if each of them are so protective of that individual identity? Not just art, but ideas and visions for change for the betterment of one and all cannot come to fruition without the support and inspiration of others. I already knew this having just come out of Savannah, Georgia, where the art school readily provided a community through which wonderful things could happen for the individual because of the group. I felt mistaken and foolish to believe it could be like that in other places such as Murfreesboro.

I took initiative to find those interested in the arts and all the hope-filled abstract ideas that accompany it by offering classes at our local Hobby Lobby. It didn't turn out very well. The one worthwhile proposition I gained through my class advertisement was an invitation to an "art party" with the founding members of Art Life. I showed up, more timid than my usual self from the months of wandering alone searching for any fulfillment in town, clutching a toolbox of supplies and some T-shirts on which I had been experimenting with relief print. I was welcomed with enthusiasm and curiosity not just about myself but my craft. Immediately techniques, ideas and goals were being shared though a palpable, loving vibration.

Through this group of young and passionate people fighting through the tough times we are all facing with vigorous, imaginative vision, I have found art and thus hope does indeed exist in Murfreesboro. This shouldn't have to be dug for like gold. I have joined Art Life with the resolve that the same art and hope I have found can be shared with the rest of our city's population. In trying economic times art and all its ideas seems to suffer most. People cannot help but worry about themselves and pinch pennies, tightly bound by the necessities of shelter and utilities. Even if the art cannot be bought, it should yet be seen. Art Life is showing it to you. If you can't buy from us at least look at us. Art Life is here to raise the mercury in the aforementioned cultural thermometer of Middle Tennessee, if even a smidge, to lift our neighbors out of these cold times, at the very least in their hearts and minds. Come out to one of our fundraising events the last Saturday of each month and take a break from the trying doldrums of our local and national suffering economic reality... and step into our reality in which the "real world" exists in a colorful, whimsical, fantastical, raw and powerful, yet ever charming, translation of our present existence in all its pleasures and trials.

Times they are a changin'

Dearest Art Life Friends:

This is Mai Harris. Most of you already know that LeAnn Lewis and myself sadly have to leave our beloved house on Kings Hwy. This house has been a hub for Art Life gatherings from the beginning. We've all had a lot of fond memories here. To make matters worse, both LeAnn and I will be leaving the boro for the moment. Neither of us will be far away though. I want to assure everyone that we will both continue to actively run Art Life and continue our mission of improving our local art community.

The last few months have been really amazing for the arts in Murfreesboro. It may be subtle, but there is definitely a change happening and I'd like to think Art Life has had a lot to do with it. We've met so many amazing artists and art lovers who have gone above and beyond contributing to our mission. I know the momentum will continue building, and one day this city is going to be much better than what it was before.

I grew up in Murfreesboro, and no matter where life happens to take me I have every intention of continuing the development of the Murfreesboro art community in whatever way I can. If we can change things here, I think we can go to any small town in America and do the same! We could change the entire country. I believe in art's ability to do that, and I believe in our ability to make it happen!

I love you all, and am so thankful to have had the opportunity to embark on this adventure with all of you. Stay strong everyone! We will keep you posted on new locations for our meetings!

xoxo

Great local businesses supporting the arts.

Murfreesboro's art community doesn't quite compare to Nashville's rapidly growing network of artisans and impressive number of galleries. However, Art Life is working to improve what we have going on here in the boro, and there are a couple of local businesses doing their part to support the arts as well.

Mesh Boutique: 113 W. Lytle St.

One of those places is Mesh Boutique located on 113 W. Lytle Street. Their store is filled with work from local artists, and all of the jewelry, clothes, and bath products are usually handmade. If you look them up on facebook, you'll see regular updates of all the fantastic items they're selling.

JoZoara Coffee Shop - 536 N. Thompson Lane
Another great local business supporting the arts is JoZoara coffee shop located on 536 N. Thompson Lane in the same area as Ross and Marshall's. Not only is their coffee amazing, but they're also selling a ton of local art with 100% of the sales going directly to the artists. They also recently hosted F.E.A.S.T. - Funding Emerging Artists with Sustainable Tasks. This event was a dinner that raised funds for a mini-grant, which any artist or local organization could submit a proposal and offer a presentation for why they should recieve the grant. If this event continues to take place in the future, Art Life will definitely be attending and applying for the grant.

Art Life plans to be releasing a zine in October, and we have every intention of using it to promote our local businesses that support the arts. This is just a taste of whats to come! Thanks for reading!

Art Life presents our Art blog!

Thanks for taking the time to check out our blog! Art Life is a group of visual artists and musicians in Murfreesboro, TN working to strengthen our local art community. We seek out ways to provide more exhibition opportunities for local artists, and we provide a networking group so that all the creative professionals in our area can collaborate and inspire one another.

Here are some things Art Life will be doing for the remainder of 2010:

  • Monthly art exhibitions at local businesses (and sometimes our homes....)
  • Lots and lots of art parties where we all get together and paint, draw, make jewelry or whatever other creative thing we do
  • Monthly fundraising parties to help raise money for Art Life and further promote our cause!
  • Coming in October: Art Life Zine! Promoting all the artful happenings here in the boro
  • In November: our holiday craft fair at YEAH (www.youthintheboro.org)
That's just a short list of what we have in the works, and I'm sure it will continue to grow. Keep checking back here for updates on our August Fundraising party, which will be on the 21st, where will be having a $5 art sale, which is exactly what it sounds like - an entire table full of incredible works of art for only $5!

Art Life is open to absolutely anyone who wants to get involved. We have meetings every Tuesday at 8pm. Check here or on our facebook page for all the details.
